Bali Island

The island of Bali lies 3.2 km (2 mi) east of Java, and is approximately 8 degrees south of the equator. East to west, the island is approximately 153 km (95 mi) wide and is approximately 112 km (69 mi) north to south; it's land area is 5,632 km². The highest point is Mount Agung at 3,142 m (10,308 feet) high, an active volcano that last erupted in March 1963. Mountains cover centre to the eastern side, with Mount Agung the easternmost peak. Mount Batur (1,717 m) is also still active; an eruption 30,000 years ago was one of the largest known volcanic events on Earth.

In the south the land descends to form an alluvial plain, watered by shallow, north-south flowing rivers, drier in the dry season and overflowing during periods of heavy rain. The longest of these rivers, Sungai Ayung, is also the longest on the island (approx. 75 km).

The principal cities are the northern port of Singaraja, the former colonial capital of Bali, and the present provincial capital and largest city, Denpasar, near the southern coast. The town of Ubud (north of Denpasar), with its art market, museums and galleries, is arguably the cultural centre of Bali.

Southern Bali in the foreground and Mount Agung behind

There are major coastal roads and those that cross the island mainly north-south. Due to the mountainous terrain in the island's center, the roads tend to follow the crests of the ridges across the mountains. There are no railway lines.

The island is surrounded by coral reefs. Beaches in the south tend to have white sand while those in the north and west have black sand. The beach town of Padangbai in the south east has both[citation needed]. The Ho River is navigable by small sampan boats. Black sand beaches between Pasut and Klatingdukuh are being developed for tourism, but apart from the seaside temple of Tanah Lot, they are not yet used for significant tourism.

To the east, the Lombok Strait separates Bali from Lombok and marks the biogeographical division between the fauna of the Indomalayan ecozone and the distinctly different fauna of Australasia. The transition is known as the Wallace Line, named after Alfred Russel Wallace, who first proposed transition zone between these two major biomes. When sea levels dropped during the Pleistocene ice age, Bali was connected to Java and Sumatra and to the mainland of Asia and shared the Asian fauna, but the deep water of the Lombok Strait continued to keep Lombok and the Lesser Sunda archipelago isolated.

The Dramatic of Kecak Dance in Bali

The Kecak dance is one of the most famous of Balinese dances. It is unusual because it has no musical accompaniment like many other Indonesian dances do, the rhythm of the dance is produced by the chanting 'monkey' chorus. Instead, a troupe of over 150 bare-chested men serve as the chorus, making a wondrous cacophony of synchronized "chak-achak-achak" clicking sounds while swaying their bodies and waving their hands .From that chanting noise of "Cak-cak-cak", then it gave the dance its name Kecak.

What makes the Kecak such a fascinating dance to watch are the fifty or so men in the checkered pants. They are both the choir and the props, providing the music for the story in a series of constant vocal chants that change with the mood of the actors. They don't sit still, either, they wave their arms to simulate fire, and reposition themselves around the stage to represent wind and fire, prison cells, and unseen hand of protection from the gods.

The dance is played in five acts and lasts roughly 45 minutes. It taken from the Hindu epic Ramayana, which tells the story of Prince Rama and his rescue of Princess Sita, who has been kidnapped by the evil King of Lanka, Rahwana and somehow with the help of the white monkey army, Rama rescues his wife and defeats the evil Rahwana.

Attending a Kecak recital is a must for any visitor to Bali. It is a wondrous experience, and a window into the musical and artistic culture that make the Balinese a special people.

Natural Beauty in Bali

Lovina, Bali 's Northern low key beach town, has several attractions especially for nature lovers. Snorkeling and diving are great and allow for a colourful introduction to underwater life. For those who want to keep their ears dry, there's also a popular attraction that can be witnessed from the safe and relatively dry environment of a boat Dolphins. It is said that Lovina is the dolphin capital of Bali and the huge statue erected in honour of the flippered mammal is a testimony to its importance for the local tourist industry. Early morning dolphin tours are offered everywhere , it doesn't really matter where you book your trip.Dolphins are early birds so prepare to wake up before the roosters because the captain of the boat will wake you up at 5 AM. Once you get to the beach in a sleepy drunken state, the boats will be rolled into the sea and prepped for departure. The boats are beautifully crafted colourful wooden vehicles with riggers that sit up to 5 people. They are made out of a single tree that's been hollowed out. Because of the riggers, these little boats are remarkably stable and seaworthy.Clusters of boats will head to the ocean and they will each start the search for the wild dolphins by systematically covering a certain area, with the captains and passengers eagerly looking for a sign of a tail or fin in the water. It is said that dolphins used to be abundant in this area but over the years their numbers have decreased and the boats have to go further and further to find them. This is one of the unfortunate consequences of both tourism and natural causes. It has never been proven that dolphins are harmed by the attention of the tourists observing them. However, the sheer absence of the intelligent and social mammal might imply a direct correlation between the organised dolphin tours and the decrease in dolphins in the Lovina bay. Other factors that might also be of concern include weather conditions, increased sea traffic and pollution. However, the unfortunate conclusion was that SD didn't catch a single dolphin snout at sea. So if you plan on going on one of these dolphin tours, be prepared to gaze at a large amount of water…and water…and water. For a glimpse of a dolphin, your safest bet would either be the before mentioned statue that proudly rises above the Lovina beachfront, or one of the small wooden miniatures that grinning sales people will offer you as soon as you set foot on land again. It is however quite a sight to see as the sun comes up and slowly enlightens the beautiful Lovina bay. Remember, that somewhere beneath the surface, dolphins might be clapping their little fins in joy and observing the tourists trapped like sardines on a boat while prodding their sleep ridden eyes to catch a sight of them.

View mountains on the way to the north bali Bedugul is the name of both a small city and a mountain-lake resort area, which Balinese have long used for weekend retreats. When the heat and humidity finally gets to you, the place to escape to is Bedugul, Bali's highland retreat, tucked into the crater of an extinct volcano, 1400 meters above sea level. Here, three lakes provide everything from recreation to the water for the springs, rivers and rice fields below. Lush pine forest seems to create freshness in the air. Bedugul is known for the quality of its fruit, vegetables and flowers. The mountain resort of Bedugul, 18 Km north of Denpasar, is known for excellent golf course. Located besides Lake Bratan, it is surrounded forested hills. A beautiful sight is the “Ulun Danu” temple which sems to out of the lake. The area offers good walks. Boats are available for was skiing and parasailing. Is done as well. The Bali Handara Country Club bungalows for rent and a restaurant

Rice terraces in Pacung this place a very nice air and very natural
It is difficult to capture the atmosphere and magnificent panorama of Pacung Indah Hotel and Restaurant on a humble web page.Try to imagine if you will a restaurant and bungalows nestled between the two highest mountain ranges in Bali. With views to infinity, we are surrounded by dense tropical rainforest and lush green rice terraces, and only 40km from Kuta and Denpasar. The restaurant caters for those who savour the Indonesian cuisine and also boasts fine European faire. If the view captivates you as it often does, you may decide to stay longer with us.

A visit to the waterfall at Gitgit should be on every tourist’s list. It is about nine kilometres from Singaraja towards the south. Although the winding road is steep and you have to walk the last part, it is accessible
by car or motorbike. You can park your vehicle at a parking lot on theDenpasar to Singaraja road from where you can see the waterfall. To get closer, you will need to walk. The path can be considered in two halves. The first part is a stepped concrete path bordered by trees and shrubs on one side and a myriad of colourful shops on the other. Halfway along the scene changes and on both sides you can see coffee and clove trees. It is a refreshing experience to walk in this quiet area where the birds take turns to sing. The air is cool and gradually gets colder a you approach the waterfall. A short distance from the waterfall, the fine water spray will cool your body. Sometimes the atmosphere will become misty. The waterfall is sixty metres high and as the water falls, it looks like white clouds falling down the mountain one after another. The falling water almost completely covers the rockface of the fall. If your camera is able, try taking some long exposure photographs.

The village of Batur use to be down in the crater. A violent eruption of the volcano in 1917 killed thousands of people, and destroyed more than 60,000 homes and 2000 temple. Although
the village was wiped out, the lava flow stopped at the entrance to the villagers temple. Lunch on view Restaurant. The historically active Mount Batur (Gunung Batur) is located at the center of two concentric calderas north west of Mount Agung, Bali, Indonesia. The south east side of the larger 10×13 km caldera contains a caldera lake. The inner 7.5-kilometer-wide caldera, which was formed during emplacement of the Bali (or Ubud) ignimbrite, has been dated at about 23,670 and 28,500 years ago,The SE wall of the inner caldera lies beneath Lake Batur, Batur
cone has been constructed within the inner caldera to a height above the outer caldera rim. The Baturstratovolcano has produced vents over much of the inner caldera, but a NE-SW fissure system has localized the Batur I, II, and III craters along the summit ridge. Historical eruptions have been characterized by mild-to-moderate explosive activity sometimes accompanied by lava emission. Basaltic lava flows from both summit and flank vents have reached the caldera floor and the shores of Lake Batur in historical time. The caldera contains an active, 700-metre-tallstratovolcano rising above the surface of Lake Batur. The first historically documented eruption of Batur was in 1804, and it has been frequently active since then. The caldera is populated with locals largely relying on agriculture for income but tourism has become increasingly popular due to the relatively straightforward trek to the summit of the central crater.
